Choosing the right electric pressure washer

The first step in choosing an electric pressure washer is understanding what the most important terms mean and how they compare. You can then determine which electric  pressure washer rating is right for you.

Pounds per square inch (PSI)

Water pressure is measured in PSI. The PSI rating indicates how much pressure is required to remove the stain. The stronger the chemical bond, the more pressure it takes to remove it.

Gallons per minute (GPM)

Water flow is usually measured in GPM. The more the GPM, the more surface area your pressure washer can clean in a minute. If washer A is rated at 1.5 GPM and washer B is rated at 3 GPM, washer B will clean twice as fast because it uses twice as much water per minute to clean.

Cleaning units

The actual test of a pressure washer is measured in cleaning units (also known as cleaning speed). Imagine two streams of water at the same pressure. The first stream has twice as much water as the second stream. Therefore, it will clean twice as fast. You can calculate CU by multiplying PSI by GPM. (PSI x GPM = CU).

Water temperature

When you get into professional equipment, you can use hot or warm water, which can make a big difference depending on the material you’re cleaning. There is no shortage of uses for hot water pressure washers. Using unheated water is standard on all pressure washers, but only some specialty units are designed for and capable of handling hot water.

Pressure washer motor types

Pressure washers come in three different motor types. It’s not something you need to worry too much about, but it pays to know what you’re purchasing.

Brush motors

These motors have brushes in constant contact with the rotating part of the motor. This causes friction, which reduces efficiency and leads to increased wear.

Universal motor

A simple motor that is compact and fast but is usually noisy and has a short lifespan.

Induction motor

A more complex type of motor that runs quieter and lasts longer.

Electric high-pressure washers vs. gas-powered high-pressure washers

Which is better? We always get this question, and the bottom line is that you get what you pay for; it all depends on your project expectations and required usage.

Some homeowners prefer electric pressure washers because they are more straightforward, lighter, and portable. You can store them in smaller spaces; they’re maintenance-free and quieter than gas-powered units. However, while the entry price of electric pressure washers may be lower for some units, they also have a typical life expectancy – several hundred operating hours. Electric pressure washers are designed to be used only occasionally and damaged to be thrown away rather than repaired. Plus, they require power and only extend to extension cords.

More people choose gas pressure washers because they are more powerful at every level, last longer, and are serviceable. If an individual part, such as a pump, fails, you can replace the pump and continue operating – almost everything on the unit’s metal frame can be repaired or replaced. And, since it runs on gasoline, you can take it anywhere to work. Most professional and semi-pro models are gas-powered and can be customized to suit your needs.

Pressure washers ideal for homeowners

You don’t have to be an expert contractor to take pride in keeping your garden and home looking their best. Consumer-grade pressure washers are very affordable and made for the DIY enthusiast. You can select between electric and gas-powered models.

Entry-level pressure washers typically have consumer-grade motors and pumps. These units are not designed for everyday use but are for homeowners who want to wash their cars weekly or perform minor scheduled maintenance on driveways, sidewalks, siding, fences, and more. As mentioned earlier, consider the critical distinction between choosing an electric or gas pressure washer in this category, as it will significantly affect the types of items your machine will be able to clean properly.

Pressure washers for contractors and professionals

Semi-professional pressure washers bridge the gap between consumer and professional units. These units typically feature a professional pump and consumer motor or a professional motor and consumer pump. Frames are usually pro-grade steel, wheels generally are made of uneven material, and you also get higher PSI, CFM, and CU options.

For those who value home maintenance more than chores, a semi-professional pressure washer is for you. They’re designed for heavy use so that you can get regular cleansing. You can choose custom settings at the semi-pro level and more efficiently use attachments or accessories like soap injectors or surface cleaners.

This is also a category that small business owners should consider if the cost is significant and their business is not big but growing. For those interested in pursuing a pressure washing business, the semi-professional category offers professional pressure washers at consumer prices. For established companies that already have a staff of employees and a pressure washer, they may have upgraded to a commercial-grade pressure washer.

Commercial/Industrial pressure washers

While PSI, GPM, and CU may be the same, that’s not what a professional pressure washer is about. It is about stamina, strength, and versatility.

Commercial-grade pressure washers are built from top to bottom with professional-grade materials so that you can use professional equipment daily. If you do this to a consumer unit, the pump will burn out faster. Professional equipment has professional-grade pumps and motors and can use hot, warm, and cold water. They are the only realistic option for professionals, contractors, and business owners. You’ll also find the best accessories, features, and customization options on the market on these models. From the wall-mounted pressure washers you’ll find at a car wash to truck-mounted and trailer-town pressure washers, BISON offers some of the best professional models on the market today, some of which can be completely customized to your application.

Electric pressure washer features

Brushless Motor

This type of motor is more efficient than standard motors, delivering more power and reducing motor heat and wear.

Motor with a digital controller

This feature provides more efficient operation by controlling water flow and pressure according to the attached nozzle.

Interchangeable nozzle tips

These accessories ensure you get the pressure and flow you need for the job. High-pressure nozzles provide a narrower spray for more cleaning power, while low-pressure nozzles provide greater coverage for spreading cleaners.

Quick disconnect nozzle

A wand with this feature can easily change between the detergent and the high-pressure nozzle.

Adjustable wand

These accessories allow you to change the pressure and spray pattern without changing the nozzle tip.

Rotating nozzles

These accessories jet in a powerful circular motion to help sweep and remove dirt.

Chemical or detergent injection

This refers to a pressure washer that uses detergent and other chemicals from the onboard tank or an external supply. Spray systems combine water and detergent.

Onboard detergent tank

Holds cleaning chemicals for easier access. Models without a built-in tank require an external source of detergent, such as a bucket or bottle, which needs to be moved whenever you move the pressure washer.

Adjustable PSI

This feature allows you to raise or lower the pressure output depending on the item you are cleaning.

Unloader and thermal relief

These design features help reduce pressure and heat buildup that damage your pressure washer.

Automatic pump shutoff

This feature shuts off the pump as soon as you release the wand trigger, preventing it from running when you are not cleaning and helping to reduce wear and tear.

An electric pressure washer offers several advantages over traditional gas-powered models or other cleaning methods. Here are some benefits of using an electric pressure washer:

Environmentally friendly

Electric high-pressure washers do not rely on fossil fuels and achieve zero emissions. They are powered by electricity, which can come from renewable sources, making them a greener option.

Łatwość użytkowania

Electric pressure washers are generally lighter and more compact than gas-powered pressure washers, making them easier to operate and store. They typically start at the push of a button and require minimal maintenance compared to gas-powered alternatives.

Quieter operation

Compared to gas-powered models, electric pressure washers operate with significantly less noise. This makes them more suitable for use in residential areas without causing excessive noise pollution or disturbing neighbors.

Cost-effective

Electric pressure washers are usually less expensive upfront than gas power washers. They are also less costly to maintain as they do not require fuel, oil, or spark plug changes.

Convenience

Electric pressure washers can be used indoors or in confined spaces because they emit no harmful fumes. They’re great for cleaning garages, basements, or patios without worrying about ventilation.

Adjustable pressure

Most electric pressure washers offer adjustable pressure settings, allowing you to customize the water pressure to the task. This versatility will enable you to clean delicate surfaces like cars or windows and tackle more demanding jobs like removing grime from driveways or decks.

Low maintenance costs

Electric pressure washers have fewer parts and require no oil or fuel changes. They are generally more reliable and last longer than gas-powered models, which typically require frequent maintenance and are prone to mechanical problems.

Przenośność

Electric pressure washers are usually lighter and more portable, often equipped with wheels or a handle for easy transport. This mobility lets you move them around your property or take them to different locations.

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and safety guidelines when using any pressure washer to ensure safe and effective cleaning.

How to maintain a pressure washer

Maintenance procedures vary by model, but proper pressure washer maintenance will keep the machine running efficiently and extend its life.

BISON, china professional pressure washer manufacturer recommends a general inspection and periodic maintenance program. Care of the pressure washer motor is critical if the unit is stored in freezing temperatures. Typically, gas-powered pressure washers require more maintenance than electric models, including changing the air filter, oil, and spark plugs.

Electric Pressure Washers FAQs

  • Electric pressure washers connect a garden hose between the water supply and the pressure washer.
  • Connect the high-pressure hose between the spray wand and the high-pressure washer.
  • Turn on the water.
  • Press the trigger on the spray wand to purge water or air from the unit.
  • Press and hold the trigger on the spray wand to release built-up pressure in the pump, and continue to hold the trigger when switched to the "ON" position.

Do not use extension cords. They will significantly shorten the service life of the machine.

  • Check if the power cord is unplugged.
  • Check to see if the GFCI has tripped.
  • Check the main fuse box to see if the circuit breaker has tripped. Plug all power cords back in and flip the circuit breakers.

Although the causes of pressure washer surge can be varied, water flow may be restricted by the pressure washer.

First, ensure all hoses are free from kinks, leaks, or blockages. Make sure all hoses and fittings are correctly connected. Make sure to turn on the faucet all the way. Set the spray wand to high pressure.

Clean all debris from the nozzle. A little bit of dirt on the tip of the nozzle could be enough of a hindrance to the pulsation of the pressure washer. If your pressure washer has a nozzle cleaner, use it to clean the nozzles. If not, you can use a small needle or paper clip to remove any debris left on the nozzle's tip.

If these have been checked and the washer fluctuates from high to low pressure, air may be trapped in the pump. To re-prime the air in the pump, turn off the machine and disconnect the high-pressure water hose and trigger gun from the power washer.

With only the garden hose connected to the machine, turn on the water and let the water run through the machine's pump for 20 or 30 seconds. Turn off the water and connect the high-pressure hose and trigger gun, then try to use the device again.

If you leave your pressure washer running without pulling the trigger, the water will remain in the pump. This water continues to heat up and can melt the seals on the pump. Also, the pump continues to heat up, so when you pull the trigger again, cold water enters the very hot pump and can cause pump cavitation.

Some pumps have bypass hoses to circulate the water and cool it down, but even with a bypass hose, you still don't want it to sit for long without pulling the trigger.

It is best to always turn off your pressure washer when not in use. If your pressure washer isn't working, or if your pressure washer keeps shutting off, this could cause the problem.
